Harvard Resume for Product Designers

Design hiring is a portfolio-first game, but the résumé still does the first filter — typically 6-10 seconds where a recruiter or design manager scans for stack, scope, and outcomes before opening the portfolio link. The Harvard format suits product designers well: it forces compression of years of work into the moments that signal seniority.

What recruiters look for

  • Portfolio link above the fold (under the contact line)
  • Specific tools (Figma, Framer, Origami, ProtoPie, Webflow)
  • Design system contributions named (component count, adoption)
  • Outcomes from research (NPS lifts, task-completion deltas, churn drops)
  • Cross-functional credibility (shipped with eng, partnered with PM/data)

Required sections, in this order

Header customisation

  • Portfolio URL as the second contact-line entry (after email)
  • Optional: a single tagline under the name — e.g., 'Senior Product Designer · B2B · 8 yrs'
  • Behance / Dribbble only if the work there is current and case-study-style

Experience bullets — design-specific

  • Lead with the design problem, not the visual output
  • Quantify user-research scope (interviews conducted, usability sessions run)
  • Pair quant outcome (metric moved) with qual outcome (insight that changed scope)

Skills section content

  • Tools: 5-8 you actually use weekly, not the entire toolbox
  • Methods: design systems, design tokens, ResearchOps, accessibility (WCAG)
  • Adjacent skills only if real: 'production CSS, HTML, light JS' — never 'coding'

Strong vs weak bullets

Before

Redesigned the onboarding flow

After

Redesigned the 9-screen B2C onboarding flow for a 4.2M-MAU product; ran 18 usability sessions and 22 user interviews informing the new architecture; lifted Day-7 retention from 28% → 41% across iOS and Android within 6 weeks of launch

Names the surface scope (9 screens), the user base (4.2M MAU), the research depth (18+22 sessions), the metric (D7 retention +13 points), and the platforms (iOS + Android). A design manager infers full-cycle ownership.

Before

Built the company's design system

After

Founded and shipped the design system 'Quarry' from 0 → 84 components in 14 months; adopted by 7 product teams covering 92% of the application surface; reduced average ship time per new feature by 38% (measured against 12 reference features)

Component count (84), team adoption (7), surface coverage (92%), and the meta-metric (ship-time reduction with measurement methodology). Senior designers read all four signals.

Before

Collaborated with engineering and product

After

Co-led the pricing-page redesign with 1 PM + 3 engineers; ran a 4-week design sprint covering 6 hypothesis variants; A/B tested winning variant against control over 8 weeks, +21% conversion-to-paid

Pod composition, sprint duration, hypothesis count, A/B duration + outcome. Replaces 'collaborated' with a specific, run-it-yourself shipping story.

Mistakes specific to this role

  • Putting a 'design philosophy' paragraph at the top. Save it for the portfolio about-page.
  • Listing every Adobe app. List 3-5 tools you'd be tested on in interview.
  • Vague 'led design' bullets without quantified outcomes. Even qualitative outcomes (e.g., 'changed how the team scopes features') need a measurement.
  • No portfolio link or one that 404s. The most common reason a strong designer gets rejected.

Frequently asked

Should I send Behance / Dribbble or a custom portfolio site?
Custom site if you have one — recruiters trust it more (signals ability to ship a personal project). Dribbble is fine for visual exploration but rarely the primary link. Behance is dated for product roles.
Where do design talks or conference appearances go?
Under a 'Talks & Writing' section between Skills and Awards if you have 2+. Single appearance can go in Awards. Include venue, year, talk title.
How do I show design system contributions if I wasn't the founder?
Name the components you owned (e.g., 'owned 18 of 84 components including Table, Drawer, and Combobox; led 3 RFCs') and the meta-impact (adoption rate, breaking changes you prevented).
